What are we going to do about the national crisis of childhood diabetes?
- About 1 in every 400 children and adolescents has diabetes
- U.S. kids 8 – 18 average 8 hours a day in front of some type of media screen
- Health care providers are finding more and more children with type 2 diabetes, a disease usually diagnosed in adults aged 40 years or older.

Last Thursday I hosted a breakfast to welcome Denise Quarles, the Director of Sustainabilty for the City of Atlanta. I felt like I was surrounded by members of my extended family. These are people who I’ve been working along with and who share my passion of cleaning up our environment for future generations. It was a great morning of reconnecting and sharing ideas. (more…)

There is a shocking event happening in the U.S. to our honeybees and I want everyone to be aware of the problem. We are losing our honeybees in the U.S. at an alarming rate. This phenomenon is not only a problem in the U.S however, but all over the globe.

2011′s Captain Planet Foundation Benefit Gala was an enormous success. We raised over $855,000 for our children and the environment. The money raised will help fund Captain Planet Foundation’s mission, to support hands-on environmental projects which are designed to encourage innovative, game-changing initiatives that will inspire and empower the next generation of environmental stewards. This year Rutherford and I were invited to the White House Christmas Party. The tree was decorated with medals of honor, service badges and handmade cards by the children of service members. It was the First Ladies brilliant idea! The house smelled like Christmas, so clean and piney from the smell of Christmas trees and other greenery. (more…)

This past Wednesday I was a speaker at TEDxWomen. The experience was amazing, humbling and gratifying to say the least. The truth is I was pretty nervous about speaking among this truly accomplished group of people. I knew it was really a special chance to share my passion and speak about a topic which is so important but also difficult. My section was Relationships, and I spoke about the relationship between population growth and resource scarcity, but how empowering women is the first step to solving this global crisis. Each day we are handed new challenges, some small, some large, but it is how we address these that define who we are and how we live our lives. When I walked off stage, I knew I had conquered my fear and that in so doing, I continued to spread a message that is key to the success of future generations.
