The world is experiencing a rapid rise in the market for air conditioning. On one hand, this is a positive indication that families all over the world can now afford air conditioning that once could not, but what does this mean for our planet?
Stan Cox, author of Losing Our Cool:Uncomfortable Truths About Our Air-Conditioned World (and Finding New Ways To Get Through the Summer), estimates the world consumption of energy for cooling could explode tenfold by 2050. This presents a big challenge for slowing down global warming.
We can all help reduce pollution, water use, climate impact and our own expenses by programming our thermostats and turning up the temperature to at least 75 degrees in the summer. Even simple acts like closing your curtains during the heat of the day can make a big difference. I recently just put up new drapes in our stairwell and reduced temperature in that area significantly. We all must do our part.
Make sure you read Stan Cox brilliant article on our overly “conditioned” world.
