The future of the environment lies in the hands of our children. That’s why I loved co-chairing the 9th Annual Earth Day Kids’ Fest with the Captain Planet Foundation and the Chattahoochee Nature Center. The festival was a great way for kids to participate in all kinds of hands-on activities that were both fun and educational. At the nature center, kids did everything from interacting with animals and listening to music from around the world to creating bird feeders from recycled plastic bottles. They even had the opportunity to get an NFL experience with “Recycle on the Run.” Sponsored by the Ovie Mughelli Foundation, the sports obstacle course highighted earth-friendly fun.
As part of the festival, Debbie Smith, creator of the Idbids characters, and I held a signing for our first book, Lola the Flower’s A to Z Garden Guide. Full of colorful pictures and the signature Idbids friends, the book is an early-reader’s edition, helping young children learn about the garden and inspiring them to start one, as well as teaching them the importance of eating healthy fruits and vegetables. Taking care of a garden is one of the best ways to teach kids about the environment and the planet. Plus, they love to eat the fruits and vegetables that they grow! It’s great to get them nurturing seeds, growing their own fruits and veggies, and connecting with their own health and nutrition.
The earth-saving mindset and fun don’t stop at Earth Day Kids’ Fest. I hope the festival got both kids and adults thinking about how they can help improve our environment, one day at a time—including on Earth Day (April 22). Like Captain Planet says, “The Power is Yours!”
